    Khadim -

First off, I would like to express how great it is that you would interact with our class and reply on issues such as this.

However, I must come to the defence of the Vagina Monologues. I was involved in the production this year, giving a monologue, and I agree with Melia that this production is about a sense of empowerment. For me, it is not simply having a vagina that is empowering, but the act of taking something back. As one of the millions of women who have been sexually abused, I have experienced a sense of being out of control of my own body, of being vulnerable to an external source that had too many faces for me to fend off. When I was onstage performing "My Short Skirt," it was not an act - it was my voice.

I see your point in that having any of these body parts is empowering in that we are alive, but in isolating the female sexual organs, Eve Ensler (the author of the monologues), was giving a directive to women around the world to take pride in the physical form they have been given, and to make it their own. To make it something they don't feel ashamed of.

I think you misunderstand my direction, and I have no condescending attitudes towards Bessie Head, or her story. I feel the exact opposite, actually. I don't view this as "a tale of collapse" - more like an exploration of reality, and the significance of that reality to the person living it.

I really like the personal experiences you draw from, and the examples, both from the text and your hypotheiticals, that you use to get your point across. Nicely done, Jon.

I really, really liked how you introduced this entry. The analogy was really interesting - and effective. :)

I agree with you whole-heartedly; I find myself increasingly frustrated by Ono's self-promoting "nostalgia."
